Bike Mount Holder
My new GPS, a Garmin Nuvi 255 is now mounted on my Harley Street Glide. The mount I purchased is a Ram mount model RAM-B-174-GA24U that I purchased at GPS City in Calgary. They sent it to me via Fedex, and it arrived at my office the next morning. Wow that was fast service. The Ram mount came with both a "u-bolt" handlebar clamp, and with a base unit that bolts right on to the brake reservoir or clutch bracket.
Ram Mount Base
The hardware kit that is included in the kit has long bolts that replace the standard Harley bolts that tighten the clamp. The longer bolts are the same thread as the original equipment Harley bolts, and there are a couple of spacers that are used as well. The new bolts also have the same torx head on them as the original equipment bolts.
GPS Ram Mount
The main parts of the Ram Mount are the short tower that clamps onto the ball on the base unit, the diamond plate with ball and the GPS holder specific to the Garmin 2xx series GPS units. The supplied GPS holder is much stronger than the holder that comes with the GPS for use in your car. I haven't gone for a ride with the mount and the GPS on the bike yet as it is colder than a witch's *** today here on the West Coast of Canada. I am a little concerned about vibration and the electronics, but from what I've read, that is not a problem for most people. The FLHX certainly vibrates at idle though.
Garmin Nuvi 255 on Ram Mount
So here is the Garmin Nuvi 255 installed on the Ram Mount ready to go! I have noticed that the standard 12v power cord that comes with the GPS has a very large cigarette lighter plug, and it does hit the gas tank on the Harley when turned to full left lock. My next project will be to order the "hard wire kit" and connect it right to my fuse block on the accessory circuit. That might mean that I have to remove the gas tank from the bike. I guess I will cross that bridge when I get there.
