More women are riding today than ever, and our hats (or helmets) are off to you if you happen to be one of them. While many women still won't even get on the back of a bike, others have been riding for years and more are joining the ranks every day. There are several helmet styles to choose from. Each has its own set of fans, its own pros and cons. Whichever type you prefer, be that a full face helmet, a three quarter shell or a half shell beanie helmet, they are all being made today with the female rider in mind.
Size is critically important. A helmet that is too large will come off when you need it the most - in a crash. An oversized helmet will also result in a lot of neck strain because the wind gets inside and tends to pull the helmet up and to the back. If you get a helmet that is too small the result is often headaches. Be careful though, because a new helmet should feel like it might a wee bit too small. Remember that the padding inside will permanently compress after repeated use, so you should allow for this.
A helmet that is the correct size will fit snugly and contact more than just the top of your head. For instance, a full face helmet should gently grip your cheeks and jaw area in addition to the sides and top of your head. When you shake your head from side to side or up and down, your helmet should remain stable. You should not feel like your head is rolling around inside it.
So how do you find the right size? Start with this simple test. Fasten the chin strap and grab the back of the helmet. Pull it up and forward in an effort to pull it off. If it comes off, you should use a different helmet. Many online retailers provide a sizing chart that allows you to pick the right helmet size from each manufacturer. You'll have to measure your head but it's worth the effort to get a helmet that fits right, stays comfortable and that won't promote neck fatigue.
Wrap the measuring tape around your head at about one half inch above the eyebrows. It should be comfortably tight to get an accurate reading, and you should do this a few times to confirm. If your measurements vary, it is best to use the largest of your results
Use your measurement to locate the correct helmet size in your preferred make and model. If you are between helmet sizes, go for the next largest size. Stepping up to the next larger size shouldn't cause any problems, but moving down a size may cause the helmet to be uncomfortable to wear.
Finally, don't overlook the fact that a bright colored helmet will help to make you more visible to other drivers on the road. So go ahead and find that perfect ladies motorcycle helmet for you. Stay safe and enjoy the open road!
