What is the mcd intensity of the LED on the front panel of my dell tower?
I'm wanting to buy some LEDs for a project but I have no idea how bright of LED to buy.
The LED I want to buy has a mcd rating of 7000, which means nothing to me.
I need to know how bright the led on my dell is just to have some sort of comparison.
Chuck is right - I would guess around 15mcd. Mcd = milli-candelas.
7000mcd would be classed as high intensity. However for a few cents you can get 20,000 mcd and they go higher than that. You see these used in store advertising displays. They are very eye catching and draw little or no more current that the one in your Dell (about 20 m/a (milliamps).
The previous comment about th angle they are effective over is also basically correct.
If all this is new to you, you will need to put a resistor in series with your LED. I use a rule of thumb 560 ohms for 5V and 1k for 12V. This is almost certainly incorrect, but it works (and certainly well within th right power of magnitude). Correct calculations abound on the web. Email me if you want specific details and proper resistor specs and methods of wiring (eg, there are risks with LEDs in parallel in some configurations - not all).
