Getting the job you want is based on the impression you leave during each step of the interview process. The first impression is left with your application and accompanying resume. In general the resume lists your educational background, your work history and your interests. The second impression you provide by your dress and demeanor when you first walk into the interview room. Keep in mind that more than 50% of a person's perception about you is based on how you look. You cannot discount this fact. Furthermore, the person assigned with hiring will be meeting you for the first time and will draw an impression about you in less than a minute. Wearing a novelty tie is distracting and it creates the wrong impression, factors which hurt your chances of securing the job. It is a mistake to choose such a tie unless you really don't care and aren't serious about landing the job.

Every tie imparts a certain feeling which together with the rest of the outfit either blends in or stands out. You may have noticed that fashion experts recommend dark suits, white or light toned shirts, matching belts, socks and shoes and understated ties with subtle patterns. The reason they recommend such ties is because they blend in with the rest of the outfit. These types of ties coordinate with and help unify the entire look of the outfit. The final ensemble should not be non-distracting. Wear white socks and you distract. Wear a bright belt and you bring attention to your midsection rather than your face. Wear a novelty tie, and again, you draw attention. The mantra is nothing distracting. Nothing which stands out. And as mentioned already, you can share you interests on your resume, not on yourself.

If you happen to wear a novelty tie, the interviewer will most certainly notice. Most people, and this includes your potential boss, consider novelty ties too casual. For them there is nothing casual about hiring the right person to contribute to the success of their company in a competitive business market. It is about dressing for the part. Choosing a novelty tie demonstrates a lack of seriousness, respect and professionalism. Interviewers often interpret such a choice as tacky, flashy and perhaps even offensive. Even if they happen to like your tie, and there is no guarantee of that either, they may still issue mental demerit points for your poor judgment. In their minds questionable judgment, tackiness, and un-professionalism as an applicant translates into the same as an employee, and they would rather hire someone else who is already ahead of the curve.

You take a lot of time preparing for an interview, and this includes making wise choices about what to wear and what your clothing says about you. You have plenty of other opportunities to wear your favorite novelty tie, and an interview is not one of them. If you are the type of person who must try to "get away with it", your insistence and stubbornness will result in the job getting away from you.
