Choosing the right mountain bike can be a hard decision. Walk into any bike store these days and you will be inundated with a ton of beautiful rigs that cost a pretty penny. How do you sift through all these machines to find the ultimate weapon for you? Here is how...
First off ask yourself what you intend to do with this bike? Race, just ride but ride a lot, or just to get some easy exercise on the road and gravel trails?
If you just looking for a simple ride to get into the sport and ride on pathways, gravel or dirt trails then a simple hard tail mountain bike with some front suspension will do you just fine. Most companies produce these types of bikes from $200.00 to 2,000.00 dollars. The amount you spend depends on what you desire. Remember desire and needs are two different things.
Ideal things to look for are a lightweight frame that fits you comfortably and feels comfortable when you ride it. The second important factor is good brakes. Most bikes come with disc brakes these days and they are definitely worth the extra money especially if you are riding in inclement weather or on steeper terrain. They just stop better period. I would also always choose a hydraulic disc brake over a cable type disc brake system as they will perform better and last longer.
You will also be looking at some kind of front suspension and I highly recommend you go with the best fork your budget can afford. This will suck up the small bumps you will encounter on and off the trails. The next important thing to look at is the components which are the gears and shifting components of the bike. Shimano offers the best components out there and I suggest you choose the highest components your budget allows. One way to save money is to mix and match components from different levels. For example you can choose high-end components where it matters like the rear derailleur and brakes and go a model or two lower with the shifters, bottom bracket and cranks to save money.
If you do a lot of mountain biking and stick to harder trails then you will definitely want to look at a full suspension bike. These are very lightweight these days and offer between 3 and 6 inches of suspension while still coming in at under 32 pounds for the whole bike. This is very impressive. Again you need to ride different bikes to see which ones fit you best and feel best as you ride them. This is something that is different for everyone so you must deal with a store that allows you to demo the bike. A good dealer will allow you to test out any bike. Again choosing more suspension will always make it easier on you and allow you to ride tougher stuff so always go bigger. Again choosing components will depend on what you want to spend and by mixing and matching you can save a bit of money.
If you are heading down the road to becoming a hardcore racer then you will be looking for the highest level in components the lightest weight and lightest frame possible. The unfortunate thing is this will also cost you the most money. Remember if you really want something better then always go with it as like anything if you spend your hard earned dollars it is best that you get something you love, otherwise you will always be sorry you did not upgrade at the time.
