All About Surf Equipments
Surfing can be done with n number of pieces of equipment, which includes surfboards, longboards, bodyboards, wave skis, stand up paddle boards, kneeboards and surf mats. Now we will talk about each one in short.
Surfboards’ were originally made of solid wood and used to be comparatively large and heavy (very often up to 13 feet long and 48 kg). Lighter balsa wood surfboards (allegedly first made in the late 1940s and early 1950s) were improvement version, not only good for carrying, but also in increasing intense maneuverability on the wave.
Modern surfboards are generally made of polyurethane foam (with one or more wooden strips), polyester resin and fiberglass cloth. And now an emerging technology is an epoxy surfboard. These surfboards are stronger and lighter than traditional fiberglass surfboards. Surfboard designs did not incorporate materials such as carbon fiber and variable-flex composites.
The equipment that were used in surfing included a leash (to prevent a surfboard move from shore after a wipeout, and preventing it from hitting other’s boards), surf wax and/or traction pads (to prevent surfer's foot from slipping off from the deck of board), and fins which could be permanently attached or temporarily or interchangeable.
There is a term used in snowboarding board wear, which is also pronounced the same in surfing sportswear. Varying on the climate the sportswear of surfing varies from boardshorts, swimsuits to surf trunks and rash guards. In very cold weather ad in cold water only wetsuits are practiced to wear along with boots, hoods and gloves iin order to get the protection from cold.
Now days there are various surfboard designs, sizes and shapes are used. Modern longboards, commonly 9 to 10 feet in length, are merely reminiscent of then used surfboards. Competitive longboard surfers have to be competent enough for traditional manoevres.
Started from early 1960s today's common thruster style shortboard gained popularity, and were known by its fin design. Thrusters were said to be founded by Australian surfer. Midsize boards, sometimes called funboards and they offer more maneuverability than the longboards while providing more floatation than the shortboards.
