Swat Special Force
The Special Weapons and Tactics or SWAT team was begun in the mid-1960s. During those years there were several instances of sniping against both civilians and police personnel mainly in Los Angeles but also all around the country. Officer John Nelson presented the idea of an efficiently and extensively trained unit with more firepower capability than the regular police force to Inspector Darryl Gates. Inspector Gates agreed such a group was needed and 15 four man teams were formed. The members all volunteered to join the SWAT unit from other police positions. All were ex-military and all had specialized training.
Known only as "station defense teams" at first, each unit primarily provided security for the police during a crisis. When they were not actively in the field the men trained. SWAT team training is very extensive. They are trained for responding to "drug busts, high-risk traffic stops, domestic terrorism, chemical weapons, weapons of mass destruction, hostage situations, barricaded suspects, crowd control, and serving of high-risk warrants. They are also taught communication skills and negotiation, use of firearms, use of lethal and non-lethal force, and how to avoid and diffuse dangerous situations." Today, officers are also being trained to carry and use chemical suits and breathing masks in case of a chemical attack.
On December 9, 1969 a siege on the Black Panthers Headquarters begin after the Panthers opened fire on the forty officers that had come with warrants to search the building for illegal weapons. Four hours later the Black Panthers surrendered to the SWAT team. Only three police officers and three Panthers were wounded in the fight. Because of mounting pressure to respond as a team in a short time period, the unit was assigned full time to the Metropolitan Division in 1971. This was also when the unit starting calling themselves the Special Weapons and Tactics division and the SWAT team officially came into being. In 1974, the SWAT team faced their biggest challenge to date. The Simbianese Liberation Army or SLA, a group of fugitive terrorists, had begun a shootout with police and were responding to appeals of surrender with automatic gunfire. The SWAT team responded and though they made fifty-four attempts to get the terrorists to surrender, all six refused to come out and surrender and died from a fire in their residence. As a testament to their high-quality training, not a single police officer was injured in the shootout.
A standard SWAT team unit today is made up of six teams of five officers each. A fourth of their time on duty is spent in grueling training to keep them ready for action. Dedication to their team, physical fitness, expertise with their weapons, and proficiency in tactics and training make SWAT team members an elite force within the ranks of the police. Always ready to support their fellow police officers and protect their fellow citizens, the SWAT team is an invaluable asset to our country's emergency personnel.
