Hypothermia is the term for the condition in which an organism's body temperature falls below what is necessary for normal metabolism and other bodily functions. In warm-blooded animals (animals whose heat is generated through the body and not the sun or other heat source), core body temperature remains close to a level constant through biological homeostasis. When the body is exposed to a lot of cold, internal mechanisms may be able to replace the heat lost to the surroundings the body.

Hypothermia is the opposite of hyperthermia. In hyperthermia, a person or animal is too hot. That translates into heat exhaustion and stroke heat.

In humans, normal body temperature is about 97.88 degrees Fahrenheit. Hypothermia can be divided into three stages of severity on the basis the difference between normal body temperature and the temperature of the person's actual body.

In the first stage hypothermia, low body temperature between 1.8 and 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit. The person with hypothermia has a body temperature of between 95 and 96.8 degrees. The person experiences mild to strong shaking and unable to perform complex tasks with their hands. The hands also become numb. In addition, blood vessels in the corrugations of the extremities in an attempt to reduce heat loss to the outside air. The breathing becomes rapid and shallow. Goose bumps on the skin surface. Goose bumps raise hairs on end. This is an attempt to create an insulating layer of air around the body. In humans, this is of limited use because of the limited amount of hair. In other species, it is effective.

At the end of the first phase, people often a feeling of warmth, as if they have recovered. This is actually an indication that the person is moving in the second stage hypothermia. Another test for body has declined from 3.8 to 7.6 degrees. Shivering becomes more violent. Moreover, lack of coordination in the muscles becomes apparent. Any movement is slow and labored, accompanied by a stumbling pace and mild confusion. The victim may, however, seem to be alert. The surface blood vessels contract further as the body attempts to focus its remaining resources on keeping the vital organs warm. The victim, therefore, becomes pale. Lips, ears, fingers and toes may become blue.

In the third stage of hypothermia, body temperature drops below 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Shivering usually stops at this point. The victim has difficulty speaking, the experience of slowed thinking, and start showing signs of amnesia. The person may also lack the capacity to use hands.
